Terrazzo has its roots in the days when workers began covering the terraces around their homes with marble. In the Fifteenth century, mosaic artists in northern Italy swept up the marble scrap and smoothed the surface by simply walking on it. Terrazzo caught the eye when the workers learned to press the chips into a more durable clay base and then grind and polish them with heavy stones. The cement paste was replaced by resin, making it more durable and less susceptible to erosion. The disadvantage of epoxy or resin-based terrazzo is that it can only be used for indoor and not outdoor applications.
